Frequently Asked Questions
Where do your participants come from?
Most participants come from North America. Most people hear about our program through our large circle of friends and alumni. As word spreads and friends travel, our diversity grows. In the past few summers we've had participants joining us from Germany, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Spain, England, Venezuela, Russia, Africa, Israel, China, Malaysia and Mexico.
Which trip is right for me?
For most first time participants, we plan trips after a day or two of orientation in basecamp. Choosing trips after getting to know participants allows us to help make the experience meet the needs of the individual.
What do I need to bring? Do I have to buy expensive gear?
You probably have most of what you need, a sleeping bag, raingear, sturdy foot wear and enough clothes to stay warm down to 5 degrees Celsius (40F.. We supply all of the other gear you will need including: canoes, packs, paddles, PFD's, tents, cook kits, etc. Once you have registered for a program, we will include an equipment list with your confirmation package.
Do many participants return?
We have an exceptionally high return rate. Participants return because they are valued members of a supportive community which requires only that they show up, be themselves and do their best.
How do I get there?
We meet participants in Toronto, North Bay or Ottawa (depending on where they are coming from) and bring them to our basecamp in Temagami. Total travel time from Toronto or Ottawa to basecamp is about six hours. Once you have registered for a program we will include detailed travel information with your confirmation package.
Is it safe?
Safety is always our primary concern. We have never had a serious injury. All staff are certified in Wilderness First Aid and Lifesaving, but more importantly, they have extensive training and years of experience in running safe programs.
What kind of experience do I need?
You don't need any experience. Most first time participants have very little experience in wilderness travel. Over the course of the program they learn everything they need to know.
Who are your staff?
Most of our staff come from within the organization. They are extensively trained in group process and community building, wilderness first aid and expedition planning. They usually begin as participants and work their way through our program to a staff position. Once they have completed our Leadership Expedition, medical and staff training, they undergo a two to four year apprenticeship before becoming trip leaders. Visit our staff profile page to get an idea of the people who work for us.
When do programs usually fill?
Enrollment is limited to ensure a quality experience. See the request information page for current program availability.
